As the leaves change colour and we leave behind a summer of salty hair and messy buns, dried out by the sun and sea, Autum brings a new set of challenges for our hair. Frizz, dryness and dullness from the constant weather changes, heat styling and colour treatments can take its toll on our tresses. However, a good haircare routine will get your locks back to looking vibrant and silky soft in no time. Read on to find out my top tips for luscious locks this Autumn.
- Hydration is absolute key. Autumn can bring dryer air along indoor heating and heat styling; this can leave the hair dehydrated. So, drinking plenty of water is a must to hydrate those locks from the inside out. Use a weekly hair hydrating hair mask to replenish the hair with moisture and make sure your shampoo and conditioner are of a good quality, free from drying sulfates and silicones that leave a build-up on the hair shaft.
- Avoid over washing. Washing your hair to frequently can strip the scalp and hair of natural oils that are there to protect and hydrate your locks, this can lead to dry, brittle hair. Try to keep washing to a maximum of every three days to maintain a healthy balance of oils.
- Choose the right products for your hair type. If you’re not sure what your hair type is ask your hair stylist. Make sure you follow the instructions to be sure you are using product in the way it is intended. It sounds silly but so many people tell me hair products don’t work and when I ask them how they are using them they are not using the product in the right way which impacts the result.
- Protect your hair from heat styling, this is the time of year we tend to use the most heat tools and excessive heat styling will leave your hair vulnerable to breakage so make sure you protect it well. Apply your heat protector to damp hair, make sure you have a good coverage by combing the product through the hair before heat styling. Opt for heatless curling aids wherever possible.
- Keep your diet healthy, opting for healthy fats, minerals, and vitamins. Food such as leafy greens, nuts, eggs and fish and protein sources will all help contribute to healthy looking hair.
- Keep your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks is ideal but no longer than 12 weeks to keep the split ends away and your hair looking fresh.
Be conscious of how you are treating your hair and with a little extra effort you can ensure your hair looks healthy and radiant, follow these steps and your hair will carry you through the autumn.
